Workshop: The history of nationalism in image, art and fashion in Central and Eastern Europe

On 27 October 2022, another workshop in the series ‘Jewish life in Pomerania in the memory of Germans and Poles’ took place in the conference room of the US Historical Institute. The meeting was entitled: ‘The history of nationalism in image, art and fashion in Central and Eastern Europe’. It was chaired by a colleague with whom we have already had the opportunity to work brilliantly at the Summer School – Dr Anna Novikov from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research [IFZO] at the University of Greifswald. The presentation and discussion brought an unmistakable impression of how important a factor in our everyday life is the issue of creeping visual propaganda, which prepares, as can be observed on the example of the war in Ukraine, society for war and militarisation, as it hides behind it, but is also a symptom of nationalism, which, seemingly tamed and civilised, leads to conflicts and wars. Many thanks to the speaker for an interesting meeting and for making us reflect.
