The Department of History at the University of Greifswald was founded in 1863 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. Five professorships represent the individual historical epochs, as well as the auxiliary science of history and the epoch-spanning history of Northern and Eastern Europe. Withal the disciplines teaching methodology, it offers Greek and Latin studies.

The department works together with several other universities, such as in Szczecin, Gdansk, Vilnius, Riga, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, California (to name but a few) and is also eagerly interested in international research projects. The emphasis is on the studies and science of the Baltic Sea, with its diverse political, economic, social and cultural connections to other regions. Therefore, the Department of History cooperates with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research, which investigates conflict-based future projections in the societies of the Baltic Sea region and focuses on answering challenges of the present.
