Workshop “Perspectives on border region studies in Szczecin” – “River the border, river the middle of the country – from studies on historiography and geography of Slavic countries in the Middle Ages”

On Friday, 14 October, a workshop was held at the Historical Institute – a meeting with Prof. Stanisław Rosik (University of Wrocław) entitled. “River the border, river the middle of the country – from studies on historiography and geography of Slavic countries in the Middle Ages”. The event was held as part of the workshop series “Perspectives of border region studies in Szczecin”. The professor presented a masterly analysis of a source account – from Gall Anonim, about the hammering of an iron pole (not poles, as has been written and spoken so far) into the river Soława (Saale) by the Brave. Here the chronicler was building a vision of the great empire of the Brave as a model for his descendant the Wrymouth. This message became the basis for considering the question of borders in the early Middle Ages in terms of narrative sources. It should be emphasised here that the narrative created by Gall’s message functions within the sustained political myth of the driving of border posts into the Oder River essentially to this day. An important part of the meeting was a discussion on the problem of borders and the analysis of sources.
